Jayawardena and Dilshan began the chase towards the target of 247. Unfortunately, Dilshan fell early by an impressive ball from Tim Bresnan. The in swinging dart took the bails off, and sent Dilshan back to the dressing room without troubling the scorers.
Mahela again succeeded with aggressive approach. The youngest star, Dinesh Chandimal, joined Mahela to steer the Sri Lankans’ chase. Chandimal showed his inexperience with his risky approach, with quick singles and a strange shot collection. He started the Inning as experienced shooter. He tried to put the English bowlers out with a strange shot collection. Mahela gave great assistant to youngster throughout the innings.
The English commentators appeared to be disappointed by Chandimal’s batting, calling it foolish play. But it eventually led to success. He continued to fight the English attack, and tried some brave shots to keep the bowlers off their length.
English bowler Stuart Broad restricted Chandimal’s progress with quick short pitched balls, placing Ian Bell at short leg. Chandimal showed his ability by facing Broad’s quick bullets. Mahela instructed Chandimal not to go for chase. He got through and the English pace attack failed. Balls started to swing during the middle overs, Sanga played with cool head to get through the difficult situation, and Chandimal stocked at the crease. He disappointed at one end he took 15 minute to pass the most needed half century. It was a great milestone for the 21 year old. The English commentators commented about his character in the moment. He took long time, some 15 to 20 odd balls, to reach his milestone.
He then started to exhibit his shot collection with impressive capabilities. He never gives up for the tall English pace attack. He used his feet to smack the ball all over the ground.
In the end, it was a thrilling contest. Chandimal wanted to achieve his second career at historic Lord’s Cricket Ground. When Mathews came in, Sri Lanka wanted 17 runs in 44 deliveries. Mathews showed his calmness and his mental stability and gave great support to the young teammate.
Mathews squandered 21 deliveries for his lone run. It was an anxious moment for Sri Lankan Dressing Room. TV Frames showed the disappointment his teammates felt at that time. Mathews left 47th over as a maiden and refused a single at 4th Ball. Chandimal almost had a run to Mathews’ end, but Mathews sent him back, showing his confidence in the youngster.
Dilshan could be seen becoming increasingly restless, especially when Mathews turned down a single with Chandimal almost sharing his crease at the striker's end. "I was disappointed when Mathews didn't take a single, but they haven't played too much cricket," he said.
At one point the 12th man tried to come on with a pair of gloves but was waved away by the umpire, only for Mathews to signal he needed a new bat or glove.
Chandimal took the risks on his own and tried some strange shots at the peak of the match. He tried scooping the ball and gave half a chance to English wicket keeper.
Nasser Hussain and other English commentators paid more attention to the Sri Lankan victory. They had never experienced this before. As they Quote "First win the game, if not it will jump up and bite you."
Kevin Pietersen then became involved in an exchange of views. Near the end of the match, Tim Bresnan received an unforgettable gift from Chandimal, which allowed him to reach his century, belting a massive six over long on. It was an extravagant way for the youngster to achieve his century. Chandimal received a standing ovation from the Lord’s faithful for his outstanding innings.

"Experts will classify this innings as an inexperienced performance of mischief. But, as I see this as a brave performance. He was never shy to play against the tallest pace attack. An experienced player will try to settle down with defensive start. But, Chandi showed a mature performance. It was his day and a well deserve a century."
It was a very emotional moment for all fans in attendance, as Chandimal closed the game with an impressive cover drive over the short extra cover fielder to the fence.

Dilshan admitted he was disappointed with how the team crossed the finishline, as Angelo Mathews blocked out overs and declined singles to allow Chandimal to reach his hundred. However, he added, the value of that innings to a young batsman would bring huge benefits for the team.
As Chandimal celebrated, the England players stood stone-faced in their positions. "It was different, I've never seen that before," Cook said. "They were perfectly entitled to do it if they want but it was a bit strange and the cricketing gods may look at that in a bit of disgust."

While the finish was slightly messy and undignified, it shouldn't disguise another impressive performance from Sri Lanka. That Chandimal, at 21 a player for the future, played such a key role for the development of the team. He has spent a lot of the tour carrying drinks on this tour, and managed to run himself in having replaced the retired Sanath Jayasuriya, so this innings showed resolve.
"Chandimal played like an experienced guy and batted throughout the innings and he finished the game which is a good sign for Sri Lanka cricket," Dilshan said. "With guys like myself, Mahela and Sanga we have a good unit and we have played well in the last two matches."
