A Sri Lankan man was among four people wounded in separate stabbing incidents in Male on Saturday night, according to reports reaching Colombo.
The other three were Maldivians one of whom died in hospital, the following day.
Maldivian newspapers earlier reported that a foreign expatriate, was among the victims, and was receiving treatment after being assaulted with a sharp object by two men on a motor cycle. On Tuesday night, reports reaching Colombo confirmed that the foreign expatriate is a Sri Lankan male. “We know it’s a Sri Lankan but don’t have any other details,” said a Sri Lankan national by telephone from Male, adding, "it is also possible that he was mistaken for a local.”
The High Commission in Male could not be immediately reached for confirmation. It was unclear whether the attacks were connected to the ongoing political crisis in the country or were general incidents of crime.
