North Korea has put its artillery and ‘‘strategic’’ rocket units on combat ready status, with orders to prepare for strikes against the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam, state media is reporting.

A statement from the Korean People’s Army supreme command on Tuesday ordered ‘‘all artillery troops including strategic rocket units and long-range artillery units to be placed under class-A combat readiness’’.

The units should be prepared to attack ‘‘all US military bases in the Asia-Pacific region, including the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam’’, as well as South Korea, said the statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

Despite its successful long-range rocket launch in December, most experts believe North Korea is years from developing a genuine inter-continental ballistic missile that could strike the continental United States.

Hawaii and Guam would also be outside the range of its medium-range missiles, which would be capable, however, of striking US military bases in South Korea and Japan.

The supreme command announcement came days after the South Korean and US militaries signed a new pact, providing for a joint military response to even low-level provocative action by North Korea.

While existing agreements provide for US engagement in the event of a full-scale conflict, the new protocol addresses the response to a limited provocation such as an isolated incident of cross-border shelling.

It guarantees US support for any South Korean retaliation and allows Seoul to request any additional US military force it deems necessary.

North Korea shelled a South Korean border island in November 2010, killing four people.

UPDATE:

In response to the North Korean military's latest move, South Korean military officials said they are closely monitoring the communist country to detect any signs of provocations, though the North has yet to show any abnormal activities.

South Korea upgraded its military readiness and surveillance status earlier this month during the joint drills with the U.S., and has since maintained the heightened alert status.

"The No. 1 combat readiness status is a term first used by North's state media, which means the highest level of combat readiness status," a senior military official said. "It seems to be aimed at creating a war-like situation to unite the North Korean people, though it could result in real provocations."

US says ready to respond to any contingency

The comments were condemned by the Pentagon in the US as “bellicose rhetoric”.

“We are concerned by any threat raised by the North Koreans,” said George Little, a Pentagon spokesman. “We take everything they say and everything they do very seriously. They need to stop threatening peace - that doesn’t help anyone.”

Mr Little added: “North Korea will achieve nothing by threats or provocations which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to achieve peace and stability in northeast Asia,” the spokesman said.

“We stand ready to respond to any contingency.”

UPDATE:

US sends B-2 bombers over South Korea

The United States air force's nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers carried out its first-ever firing drill over the Korean Peninsula on Thursday, the Combined Forces Command said, sending another strong warning to North Korea, which has threatened a preemptive nuclear attack on the U.S. and South Korea.

The U.S. Strategic Command sent two B-2 Spirit Bombers for "a long-duration, round-trip training mission" from Whiteman Air Force Base in the U.S. state of Missouri to South Korea in a demonstration of the country's defense of South Korea and to provide "extended deterrence to its allies in the Asia-Pacific region," the CFC said in a release.

The drill was part of the ongoing bilateral Foal Eagle training exercise, which began on March 1 and will run through April 30, to test the combat readiness of the allies.

The B-2 stealth bombers' mission involves dropping munitions and then returning to its base in a single, continuous flight ranging over 6,500 miles, the CFC said.

"The United States is steadfast in its alliance commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea, to deterring aggression, and to ensuring peace and stability in the region," the CFC said in a release. "The B-2 bomber is an important element of America's enduring and robust extended deterrence capability in the Asia-Pacific region."
