    Depends I think at his age they play with so called nylon shuttles Mavis 600. If feathersrsl practice or Ling Mai but feather tournament are played with sg gold lining.
    Don't worry about things that much. Get him a racquet and a pair of shoes and enroll him in a badminton class. He will find his way. Since you are also new to the sport don't play recreational badminton with him it will do more harm than good
