"On average, hydropower turbines kill 22 percent of the fish that pass through them. With their elongated bodies, eels are especially vulnerable. Survival rates for eels passing through traditional turbines can be as low as 40 percent.Feb 6, 2023"

Hydropower plants can have various impacts on fish populations, but whether they "kill" fish depends on several factors, including the design of the hydropower facility, its location, and the measures implemented to mitigate environmental impacts. Here are some considerations:

    1. **Fish Mortality Due to Turbines**: One of the significant concerns with hydropower plants is the risk of fish mortality caused by turbines. Fish can be injured or killed when they pass through turbines during water intake or discharge. This is particularly true for fish species that are unable to avoid the turbines or are attracted to them.

    2. **Impact on Fish Migration**: Hydropower dams can disrupt fish migration routes by blocking or altering rivers' natural flow patterns. This disruption can prevent fish from reaching their spawning grounds or accessing important habitats, which can have long-term effects on fish populations.

    3. **Changes in Water Quality and Habitat**: The construction and operation of hydropower dams can alter water quality and habitat conditions downstream of the dam. Changes in water temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, and sediment transport can affect the health and survival of fish populations.

    4. **Fish Passage Solutions**: To mitigate the impacts of hydropower facilities on fish populations, various fish passage technologies and measures are often implemented. These may include fish ladders, fish bypass channels, screens to prevent fish from entering turbines, and habitat restoration efforts downstream of dams.

    5. **Environmental Regulations and Mitigation**: Many countries have regulations in place to mitigate the environmental impacts of hydropower projects, including requirements for fish protection and mitigation measures. Environmental assessments and monitoring programs are often conducted to assess the impacts of hydropower projects on fish and other aquatic organisms.

In summary, while hydropower plants can have adverse effects on fish populations, particularly if proper mitigation measures are not implemented, there are ways to minimize these impacts through careful design, management, and regulatory oversight. However, it's essential to evaluate each hydropower project's specific environmental impacts and consider measures to protect fish and aquatic ecosystems accordingly.

In many hydropower plants, especially larger ones, various measures are implemented to prevent fish from entering turbines and to minimize fish mortality. These measures are designed to protect fish populations and mitigate the environmental impact of the hydropower facility. Some common methods include:

    1. **Fish Screens**: Screens are installed at water intake structures to prevent fish from entering the turbines. These screens typically have openings small enough to prevent fish from passing through while allowing water to flow freely into the turbines.

    2. **Fish Bypass Systems**: Bypass systems are designed to divert fish away from the turbines and guide them safely downstream or upstream of the hydropower facility. These systems may include fish bypass channels, fish ladders, or fish-friendly turbine designs that reduce the risk of fish injury or mortality.

    3. **Turbine Design**: Some hydropower facilities use turbine designs that are less harmful to fish. For example, fish-friendly turbines may have larger gaps between blades or slower rotation speeds, reducing the likelihood of fish being struck or injured.

    4. **Environmental Monitoring and Management**: Hydropower operators often implement monitoring programs to assess the effectiveness of fish protection measures and to identify any potential impacts on fish populations. Adjustments to operations or additional mitigation measures may be implemented based on monitoring results.

While these measures can significantly reduce fish mortality in hydropower facilities, it's essential to note that no system is perfect, and some fish mortality may still occur despite mitigation efforts. Additionally, the effectiveness of fish protection measures can vary depending on factors such as fish species, turbine design, and environmental conditions. Continuous monitoring and adaptation of mitigation measures are crucial for minimizing the impact of hydropower operations on fish populations.
