Pramodya claims Chamika keener on ‘ladies’ than cricket
DECEMBER 1, 2022 BY
- Believes all-rounder entertained women in hotel room
- Hurls stunning allegations in letter to SLC Secretary Mohan De Silva
- Recommends psychological counselling be given to axed player
In a letter drafted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chief Selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe to SLC Secretary Mohan De Silva regarding recently axed national cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, it is claimed that the player was more interested in “meeting ladies”, and that during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in Australia last month, Karunaratne had taken female companions to his hotel room, skipping training sessions.
The aforementioned letter, seen by
The Morning Sports, surfaced yesterday (30 November), which now gives clarity to the SLC Selection Committee’s decision to axe Karunaratne. The letter, drafted by Chief Selector Wickramasinghe, reveals several issues that came up during the World Cup. Wickramasinghe claims that Karunaratne’s commitment to cricket had declined, and that his focus is on “distractive personal matters and not on cricket”.
He also claimed that Head Coach Chris Silverwood has lost trust in Karunaratne, and that the latter has not been truthful to the coach on multiple occasions. He further claimed that Karunaratne had been more focused on meeting women while on tour, and had also missed training several times citing illness. Wickramasinghe also suggests that CCTV footage needs to be checked to determine whether Karunaratne had entertained a female companion in his room.
The letter also read: “He had been lighting oil lamps and incense sticks in his hotel room, which is totally against hotel safety policy. It would have been a major disaster if the room had caught fire, and this came to light from the hotel’s housekeeping, despite (the players) being told by the Team Manager to not leave the room without blowing out anything that had been lit with fire due to the hotel rules. Despite the warning, he (Karunaratne) repeated this the day after, having left the room with a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign outside his room, and was fined a sum of AUD 1,000 by the team management.”
Given all these issues, Wickramasinghe had also received an email from SLC CEO Ashley de Silva instructing him to not consider Karunaratne for selections for the upcoming Afghanistan tour due to a pending disciplinary inquiry.
Wickramasinghe concluded the letter thus: “We need to seriously address these issues and strict discipline has to be adhered to, ensuring these incidents will not happen again. It is my view that Chamika (Karunaratne) be referred to psychological counselling immediately prior to him taking part in any form of international cricket,” adding that this would allow the “talented youngster”, who is rated highly by selectors, a chance to bring his full potential to the table in the future for Sri Lanka Cricket.
Chamika Karunaratne was axed from the Sri Lanka national ODI squad in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. His axing jolted the cricketing fraternity, while a majority of supporters questioned the decision from the selectors that seemed to fly in the face of his decent performances during the last couple of ODI series at home.
A couple of days before the final squad was announced, Karunaratne was handed a one-year suspended ban from cricket after he admitted to an alleged brawl that took place at a casino during the T20 World Cup. The Sports Minister and National Sports Council Chairman openly voiced their concerns over the decision, while a few gossip-driven media outlets claimed that Karunaratne was shown the door for his religious beliefs.

"I was also told by the team Manager that during our stay in Sydney, a Sri Lankan Gentleman had called and wanted to meet with Chamika, mentioning that he had a problem to solve with Chamika. Thereafter the Manager refused to accommodate his request unless there was a meaningful reason to meet him, at that point the Gentleman had mentioned that Chamika had been calling his wife and bothering her with indecent proposals and being a nuisance. Contacting this Gentleman via the Team Manager, you may be able to find out more depth about the activities of Chamika, which he had mentioned that he had evidence of some grave malpractices involving Chamika,” the selector has said in a letter, which was seen by this reporter.
