Hundreds of Tiger cadres entrapped in the Thoppigala jungles commenced fleeing the area yesterday amidst major assault by the Security Forces on their Beirut base, cutting off all supply routes, Security Forces said.
The Security Forces said over 75 Tiger cadres had fled the Thoppigala jungles towards the Wanni taking cover of thick jungles west of Vakarai and south-west of Trikonamadu.
Security Forces launched a major assault on the fleeing terrorists and alerted the troops and Home Guards in settlements close to Habarana and other areas in Trincomalee fearing desperate attacks by the fleeing terrorists.
"The Tiger cadres in Thoppigala are entrapped within a few square kilometres in the jungle and Security Forces are engaged in a determined effort to flush them out," General Officer Commanding Sri Lanka Army’s 23rd Division Major General Daya Ratnayake told the Daily News.
According to LTTE cadres surrendering to the Security Forces, the LTTE has made an announcement allowing married and newly-recruited Tiger cadres to leave the organisation as they are sure of their defeat in the final battle.
However, the LTTE has given strict orders to experienced cadres to remain with the outfit and has taken special security measures to prevent them from fleeing.
According to senior security officials, the Tiger outfit is now in total disarray in the face of the major Forces assault.
"So far, nearly 100 Tiger cadres have surrendered to the Security Forces while 270 cadres have been killed during confrontations in the battle to capture Thoppigala," Major General Ratnayake said.
"We are encouraging more Tiger cadres to surrender to the Security Forces, without perishing in battle," the Major General added.
