Sri Lanka government plans to raise the price of lottery tickets sold by the National Lotteries Board (NLB) hoping to use the additional revenues for the construction of the second airport in Weerawila, about 160 miles south of the capital Colombo.

Effective from August the price of a lottery ticket will be raised by ten rupees from the existing price of ten rupees. The price money will also be doubled, the NLB said.

The Board also plans to renew the ‘Airport Lotteries’ from June. Airport lotteries are available at the Katunayake International Airport in foreign currencies for the traveling passengers.

The Lottery Board also plans to offer lottery purchases through mobile phones or fixed line phone connections from June.

Last November President Mahinda Rajapaksa inaugurated the project to construct the airport at a cost of 1.2 billion rupees. The airport to be equipped with the latest equipment and modern facilities will be able to handle 10 large aircrafts at a time. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2009.
