In addition, Basaric confirmed that DirectX 11 will also be released for Windows Vista, probably as part of the second service pack, SP2.
DirectX 11 will be more compatible with DirectX 10 hardware than most realize. There are parts of the new APIs that are independent of hardware that can run on a lower level.
There are other parts of the new API that it is hardware related, and hence will only work on hardware designed for DirectX 11. Shader Model 5.0, in this case is an example.
