Fisher families protest May Day fines by NPP-allied union
A group of Point Pedro fisherfolk families were up in arms this week after their trade union imposed a Rs 3,000 fine on those who did not take part in the ruling National People’s Power May Day rally in Jaffna last Friday.Ahead of the rally, the Koddadi Fishermen Union of Point Pedro instructed their members to join the NPP rally in Jaffna. More than 60 members did not attend the rally, prompting the union leadership to impose the fine.
Denouncing the move, the fishermen said it set a bad precedent and went against all democratic norms.
When asked about the issue, a committee member of the union said the decision to impose the fine on those
who failed to turn up was taken at the last annual general meeting.
An elderly fisherman was heard saying at the Koddadi fish market this week that it is an outrageous move by the union, considering that fishermen are struggling to put food on the table for their families amid rising costs.
