Colombo, Sep. 3 (Daily Mirror) - Despite the Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee having remained hopeful that it could have convinced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to keep the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, the country has now lost the hosting rights for the tournament, with the ICC confirming India as the replacement host.
The ICC Board ratified the decision yesterday, with the six-team tournament scheduled to be played from February 14 to 28, 2027, at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, but the ICC decided to move the event to India as Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to hold the much awaited SLC elections and instead is currently functioning on a government appointed transformation comiiteee which is against the guidelines of the ICC.
The ICC said it assessed Bangladesh, India and South Africa as potential replacement hosts against its established host evaluation criteria before recommending India as the replacement host.
The decision comes amid continuing concerns over the governance structure of Sri Lanka Cricket, including political interference and the need to hold elections and restore an elected administration recognised by the ICC.
The Daily Mirror exclusively learns that in a meeting held by the ICC two months ago, the international cricket body had informed Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee Prakash Schaffter that if SLC does not end the political interference and hold the much awaited SLC elections it would lose the hosting rights of the Women’s Champions trophy.
A senior insider said that Transformation Committee Secretary Prakash Schaffter who had been informed of the ICC's concerns had subsequently communicated the matter to the interim administration.
Although the warning had been conveyed to the committee, the Sports Ministry and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake were however not informed of the matter until very recently, according to sources.
Schaffter had earlier said that the ICC had initially indicated that Sri Lanka would host the Champions Trophy and that preparations had already begun. He later acknowledged that the ICC had informed SLC that it was considering alternative venues, although the committee remained hopeful of retaining the tournament.
That hope has now ended following the ICC's formal decision to move the event to India.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the inaugural tournament would mark an important milestone for women's cricket.
“The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket,” Shah said.
“As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition, while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage.
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world.”
The tournament will feature Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The six teams will compete in a round-robin league, with the top two sides advancing to the final on February 28.
Sri Lanka's participation in the tournament will not be affected by the loss of hosting rights, with the ICC confirming the country as one of the six participating teams.
The loss of the hosting rights nevertheless represents a major setback for Sri Lanka, which had been expected to benefit from the tournament through tourism, economic activity and increased international exposure.
According to sources, Sri Lanka could lose at least US$20 million in potential revenue as a result of the event being moved to India.
This will also be another major ICC event to be moved away from Sri Lanka amid concerns surrounding the governance of its cricket administration.
In 2023, the ICC moved the 2024 Men's Under-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa after SLC was suspended amid concerns over government interference.
Sri Lanka Cricket is currently being administered by a government-appointed Transformation Committee established to oversee reforms to the board, including changes to its constitution and governance structure.
The ICC has maintained its position on the need for SLC to have an administration that complies with the ICC Constitution and has restricted SLC's representation at ICC Board meetings while the governance issues remain unresolved.
In July, the ICC noted progress towards a revised constitution but stressed that elections needed to be held as soon as possible. It also confirmed that SLC would remain unable to be represented at ICC Board meetings for the time being.
The SLC Transformation Committee has completed a draft constitution and handed it over to the Sports Minister. The proposed reforms must go through the required legal process before being presented to Parliament.

Sri Lanka are reportedly set to suffer an estimated loss of at least USD 20 million (around Indian Rs 188 Crore) after the International Cricket Council formally stripped the country of hosting rights for the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy.
