Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.) told Parliament yesterday that the Government plans to procure four advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Israel Aerospace Industries under a government-to-government arrangement, aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka's maritime surveillance capabilities while enhancing search and rescue operations and disaster response capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Government Information Department said Parliament yesterday (5) approved a supplementary estimate, allocating Rs. 4,261 million to the Sri Lanka Air Force to establish a UAV system. The funds will be drawn from the Consolidated Fund, other Government funds, or Government loans. The move responds to the changing operational environment, disaster vulnerability in the Bay of Bengal region, and threats from persistent adverse weather conditions.
