Mrs B's policies are not suitable for our country. It's way too harsh for people who enjoyed a decent lifestyle until 1970. Imagine buying bread with your bread token?? 1/2 a loaf per adult, per day?? 3/4 pound of sugar per person per month?? No rice available on Tuesdays and Fridays?? Masoor dhal, maldivefish, white sugar, powdered milk, dried chillies, onions, are all luxuries. (my youngest brother was an infant at that time, and my father went all over Ceylon to buy him baby formula, I know one day he went to badulla, because someone tipped him off that some available in there, and a week later he went to deniyaya, and again to balangoda etc etc.) Unlike Sri lanka, Mrs Gandhi manage to apply the same unpopular policies successfully in India, and they manage to pull through. But Indians had nothing, I mean nothing at all, at that time. That's why poor Indians risk their lives to swim across the palk strait to come in to sri lanka for a better lifestyle. Since Indians never enjoyed a decent lifestyle like us,(in the 1960s/70s) they not see a big difference when they restrict imports, rationed food, clothing, and essentials. They not had good old days to compare. But, unfortunately sri lankans had good old days to compare. You have every right to say if we wait little bit more with Mrs B's policies, we may be better off. But the gain is too little for the pain we have to suffer. I still not have Sinhala fonts, otherwise I may type this in colourful Sinhala.
