1. I was going through some personal changes and issues. 2. Started my own business, it did not go well. 3. I was severely sick and took time to recover. 4. I was mentally down, and was not emotionally ready to work. Took some time off to get better. 5. My dog died, I was having hard time because of that, so took some time off. Here's why I said these are really bad ideas as an HR person and a Final year Law student. Following things are for Sri Lankan companies. They can be multinational, but located in Sri Lanka. Companies need tough people, they don't like people who took career breaks for the above mentioned reasons. There are many applicants apply for a single good job these days. Most of the time, a single good job gets more than 100 applications. So, if it's a senior position, if someone with a career break applied with no explanation, many companies won't even contact them. Even if they contact, the applicant then needs a very good reason to justify his career break to be successful in the interview. 1. The first one is a very weak reason. The company will think you can't balance work and life. 2. Companies don't like business people. Historical data says people who try or do business don't put much effort in office working hours for the company they work for. You failed at one business. But while working, you might try to start another business. Many company contracts prohibits doing business if you work with them. 3. You are a sick person, we don't want unhealthy people. We have many healthy applicants waiting to get this job. 4. Were you mentally down? we have many applicants who are mentally strong with a very good work history in pressurized environments. Companies need mentally strong people who can withstand high pressure environments. 5. You took a career break because your dog died. LOL Companies need you to actively contribute to their vision and make them more money. So they typically expect a strong person who can handle people without making conflicts, who can work in high pressure situations, and people with good health.
