ලබ්බෙන් හරි යුද්දෙ කරපන් කිව්ව නපුස්කයන්ගෙ හෙලුව.... Thursday, July 10, 2008, 12:15 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. July 10, Colombo: Organizers of the island wide strike in Sri Lanka today said the industrial action was a stunning victory and managed to cripple a large number of regular services in Sri Lanka. However the government says all the services are functioning smoothly and the opposition plans for a nationwide strike have failed. The strike today was planned by the Sri Lanka Marxist Party, Jantha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to urge the government to increase salaries by 5,000 rupees, to grant the cost of living allowance and to decrease the bus and railway fares. The main Opposition UNP supported the JVP call. Sri Lanka has the highest rate of inflation in the region as consumer prices in the country have risen by nearly 30% from a year ago. JVP parliamentarian K.D. Lal kantha who is also the leader of the trade union federation of JVP said the strike was 70%successful and would consider resorting to such action in the next few weeks to pressure government to take action over the burning issues. The government said the strike had little impact on essential services in the country. The military was kept in standby to take over essential services since last night. The Inspector General of Police has also cancelled leave of the entire police force with immediate effect, fearing of any uprisings in the country.
