The main Opposition UNP supported the JVP call.Sri Lanka has the highest rate of inflation in the region as consumer prices in the country have risen by nearly 30% from a year ago.JVP parliamentarian K.D. Lal kantha who is also the leader of the trade union federation of JVP said the strike was 70%successful and would consider resorting to such action in the next few weeks to pressure government to take action over the burning issues.The government said the strike had little impact on essential services in the country. The military was kept in standby to take over essential services since last night.
