The five military officers had been found guilty of the charges in the murder case by a three-member panel of judges in the Colombo High Court and had been sentenced to death. Some time back, the High Court acquitted General Anuruddha Ratwatte, former deputy minister of defence and two of his sons who had been charged over the killings in Udathalawinna. The Supreme Court, after considering the special plea by the five accused sentenced to death, challenging the earlier decision, acquitted the five persons of all charges. It was a unanimous decision by the panel of judges comprising Chief Justice, Ashoka N. De Silva, Nimal Gamini Amaratunga, Jagath Balapatabendi, P. A. Ratnayake and Chandra Ekanayake. The Attorney General had filed charges against the accused in connection with the killing of ten persons at Udathalawinna on the day of the General Election on December 5, 2001. - http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2009/07/five-found-guilty-of-udathalawinna.html
