Cusco is at an elevation of 3400m. Some have difficulty in breathing. There are medicines to help and coca tea is available in the hotel round the clock, which also eases the high altitude problems.From Cusco drove to Ollantaytambo - stayed in Hotel Pakaritampu - Sacred Valley. Then took the Vistadome train (approx $95 US one way- operated by Peru Rail - There are cheaper options too including a standard normal rail services) to Aguas Calientes -  effectively the small township of Machu Picchu where we stayed for the night. Early morning took the shuttle bus (about $24 US return)- left the hotel at 5.30AM - there was a big queue for the bus. There are 26 small buses running one after the other. Took more than 30 minutes for us to board. The bus takes you right at the doorstep of Machu Pichchu.Well... if you don't take he bus then you have to walk just like you mentioned. if anyone needs more details I am happy to provide.
