Then the Chairman would have the moral authority to preach to other member countries as well,” UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera told a news conference today.However, he said Sri Lanka should implement three proposals immediately in order to prove that the country was truly committed to the Commonwealth Charter.“The government can repeal the 18th Amendment and restore independent commissions. It can also pass the Freedom of Information Act immediately in the Parliament. A credible and independent investigation into war crime allegations should also be initiated without paving the way for an international interference,” he said.He said the Commonwealth General Secretary could pressurize the Commonwealth Chairman to implement these actions.“Implementing these actions would prove that the Rajapaksa regime has changed from its authoritarian direction and is sincere in its commitment to the fundamentals of democracy,” he said.
