The first ever Heart transplant in Sri Lanka.. History is being made in Teaching Hospital , Kandy, as I write this down. A 21 year old youth , brain dead form a massive head injury from a RTA, became the donor of the first ever heart transplant in Sri Lanka. The complex procedure involved many doctors and included Transplant Coordinators, Aneasthesioligists , 3 heart surgeons , a Transplant surgeon , Cardiologist and many more supportive staff. The procedure commenced at 7 pm, on 7 July 2017. Dr Jagathi Perera , Consultant Cardiothorasic Anaeastetist anaesthetized. The heart was harvested by Dr. Anil Abeywicrama, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon , Teaching Hospital , Kandy. The recepient was a lady in her mid 30's from Anuradhapura, suffering from cardiomyopathy. Cardiac surgeons Mudhitha Lansakara and Gnanakaanthan transplanted the heart and it was beating again in 3 hours. Cardiologist Sunethra Irugalbadaara looked after the heart while Cardiothorasic Anaesthesiologist Dr. Jagathi Perera provided anaesthesia for the pioneering operation. The two kidneys and the liver was harvested by Dr. P K Harischandra , the veteran Transplant Surgeon , and the most prolific renal transplant surgeon in Sri Lanka, with more than 1000 kidney transplants to his credit. Dr Harischandra also pioneered cadaver renal transplants in Sri Lanka. Dr Harischandra has already transplanted one kidney and is on his way through the second transplant while all doctor-critics sleep tight in the early hours of this morning, on the 8 th of July. I am thrilled about this long awaited milestone procedure , and pray for this lady , for a speedy recovery . I congratulate all the doctors and the supportive staff involved...I wish the team all the very best.. This is a picture of the transplanted heart beating in the chest of the recepient ...
