In this generuc sense the word Langkaa and Ilangkai is found used in Old Tamil and Maldivian language. It is found used in the place names of Andhra, Karnataka, Orissa, and Assam. Even there is an isolated mountain of Himalayas in Uttarakhand named Lanka.The oldest name of Srilanka was Tamraparni Dvipa. This is because this island was located to the east of the mouth of Tamraparni River of Pandya Janapada in southern Tamilnadu. Tamra Parni means copper colored leaves. The sea port of Korkai (mentioned as Pandya Kavata in Ramayana) located near the mouth of Tamraparni was famous for its connect with distant trade partners like the Greeks and Romans.Hence the Greeks and Romans called Tamraparni Island as Taprobane. This is mentioned by Megasthenes and Ptolemy. This name was in use from around 4th century BCE onwards. In Asokan edicts  of 3rd century BCE Tamraparni is mentioned. The  Late edits of Mahabharata mentions it as Tamraparni. Mahavamsa (5th  century CE, Pali) too mentions it.Another name of Srilanka was Simhala Dvipa. This is how Mahabharata popoularly mentions Srilanka. The name Lanka is not used to denote Srilanka in Mahabharata. Divyavadana, mentioned Simhala Dvipa in 2nd Century CE. Dipavamsa and Mahavamsa in Pali language too mentions it as Sihala and Simhala. They mentions prince Vijaya as the founder of Simhala people of Srilanka. Portuguese pronounced it as Cylone, since 16th Century CE.The name Ilankai,  and Langkaa was used to denote many islands inside rivers, lakes as well as to denote Srilanka too in Tamil literature. To specifically denote Srilanka they used the term Eelamka, Ten Ilankai etc. These terms are found in Samgam literature, Akananuru, Purananuru, Silappatikaram and Manimekalai.
