And after all economic downturn and an essential feature of the capitalist economy. No capitalist country is immune from them, even if perfect policymakers run the country. But to think that the cause of the US sanctions is bad governance and corruption and stuff is just mind-numbingly naive. Sanctions always are imposed because of geopolitical reasons. US considers south America as their backyard same as Russia considers former soviet states as their sphere of influence. American security rest on there being no challenger to US in the southern hemisphere. So they can easily project power outside without the danger of being challenged at home. Venezuela is one of the few countries that can challenge the US hegemony in South America. That is the reason for sanctions. The reason being Chavez dared to challenge the US hegemony in South America. US cannot tolerate such states in their backyard. Look at Cuba. It has been now almost 60 years since the Cuban missile crisis. US still imposes sanctions on Cuba. There is no Soviet Union, it has collapsed for 30 years. Cuba poses no real threat to American security.  But still, Cuba must pay for having the audacity to challenge US in their backyard.</p></blockquote><p></p>
