A time when the word ‘Colombo’ reflected nothing but the long stretch of the Galle Face Green ending with the twin towers and of course the ever-so-famous ‘Pittu Bambuwa’, the building of the Bank of Ceylon Head Office. Well, ‘that’ landscape of the city began to change not so long ago with highrise buildings making their dramatic entrance.Immediately after the end of the war in 2009, foreign investments started to flow into the country; many of them focusing on the hotel industry. World renowned hotels such as Shangri-La, ITC, Mövenpick, Sheraton, Marriot and Hyatt showed effort in marking their presence in Sri Lanka. Apart from international hotel chains, projects by Sri Lankan hotel chains, high-end apartment buildings and mixed development projects were also mushroomed in the city. While most of them are almost completed and ready to open by 2017, the constructions of the rest are still underway.All these elegant buildings are unique in their own way with architectural features second to none. These skyscrapers will certainly change the landscape of the city skyline like never before, challenging one another. The Board of Investment (BOI), which coordinates these projects, said the skyline in Colombo will be different in the near future. BOI Media and Publicity Director D.S. Samarasinghe said a ‘Construction Boom’ was taking place in the country as a result of the increasing demand for housing and office spaces. This was a trend in the Asian region, he added.
