Japanese backed LRT system feasibility studies on track The government is moving aggressively to get Sri Lanka’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) system proposed in the megalopolis development implemented to deliver an efficient and lasting mass transit solution for the city, Western Region Megalopolis Investments Head and Urban Development Policy Advisor Nayana Mawilmada said. According to Mawilmada, both governments have already started the detailed technical feasibility backed by Japan’s funding to initiate the physical implementation of the LRT as soon as possible. The construction work will be implemented once the feasibility study is finalised by both parties. The initial segments of the LRT system will be elevated, given the high density of existing development. The LRT system is also expected to interconnect with the rail and bus networks to provide part of an integrated solution. Commenting on the concept behind the light rail project, Mawilmada said the introduction of LRT will be truly transformation for the city as it has been designed to find a sustainable and long term solution for the city’s increasing congestion. Under the proposed transport master plan, rail tracks, stations, siganalling, communication and ticketing systems will be upgraded. In addition, existing rail lines such as Panadura to Polgahawela, Ragama to Negombo and the Kelani Valley line will be electrified and new rail lines from Kottawa to Horana and Kelaniya to Dompe will be implemented. The overall transport master plan under the megalopolis plan includes introduction of a light rail system, electrification of railways, modernisation of the bus transportation system and the introduction of canal transport. Mawilmada also added that 100 km stretch of the Panadura - Veyangoda track will modernised and electrified and the project is scheduled to be completed by 2020. - http://www.dailynews.lk/?q=2016/09/30/business/94518
