Govt. weighs options on purchase of J-17 aircraft Yi Xianliang speaks to 500 Chinese investors on Sri Lankan opportunities December 4, 2016, 9:08 am by Zacki Jabbar While the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government ponders from whom it should purchase its requirement of twelve J-17 aircraft, around 500 Chinese businesses are exploring investment opportunities in a wide range of sectors in Sri Lanka. China’s Ambassador in Colombo, Yi Xianliang told the "Sunday Island " last week that he had spoken to as many as 500 Chinese entrepreuners and businessman who were keen on either stand alone or joint venture partnerships with their Lankan counterparts. "I also held seven meetings with your Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Investments would easily exceed USD 5 billion," he said. Greater Chinese participation comes amidst the stalled 1.4 billion USD Colombo Port City, renamed Colombo Financial City, resuming construction and around 200,000 Chinese tourists having visited Sri Lanka in the first eight months of this year, marking a 32.2 percent increase which is the highest number that came from any single country. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that the government was in the process of evaluating offers from China, India, Russia and Sweden, for the purchase of J-17s. Yi Xianliang said that Chinese projects in a range of sectors including electricity , water, transport , ports and roads in Sri Lanka were worth a total of USD 1.5 billion, while direct investment had exceeded USD 400 million and was rising rapidly. " We look forward to completing construction of the Colombo Financial City and Hambantota Industrial Zone at an early date. Discussions on constructing the second phase of the Hambantota Port project are continuing." - http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=156644
