Oil, gas in Mannar Basin can meet SL energy needs for 60 yrs June 25, 2017, 12:00 pm By Ajith Alahakoon The Mannar basin contains about five billion barrels of oil and nine trillion cubic feet of natural gas, Parliament was informed on Friday. The amount of fuel and natural gas there is sufficient to meet the country’s energy needs for 60 years to come, says the latest report of the Public Accounts Committee presented to Parliament by its Chairman Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna on Friday. When inquiries were made about the current state of the exploration of petroleum by the PAC from top brass of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development summoned before the committee, it was revealed that between USD 59 million and USD 1 billion had to be spent for obtaining oil. The Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat has been trying to find an investor as the M2 area of the Mannar Basin is capable of moving from the exploration stage to the development stage, the PAC report says. The PAC comprises Lasantha Alagiyawanna, S. B. Dissanayake, Mahinda Samarasinghe, P. Harrison, Faizer Musthapha, Palitha Range Bandara, Niroshan Perera, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Eran Wickramaratne, Bandula Gunawardana, Vijitha Herath, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Nihal Galappaththi, Bimal Rathnayake, Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana, Buddhika Pathirana, Seeniththamby Yoheswaran, S. Shritharan, Chandima Gamage, Nalinda Jayathissa, Kavinda Heshan Jayawardana, Charles Nirmalanathan, Hirunika Premachandra, Bandula Lal Bandarigoda, Prasanna Ranatunga, and S.
