World Bank project to preserve Kandy Post Office building By L.B.Senaratne Kandy’s colonial era Post Office building is to be conserved under a World Bank project, according to the Kandy City Heritage Committee. A report containing the World Bank’s proposal for the conservation was tabled by Kandy’s Municipal Commissioner at a recent heritage committee meeting. The World Bank has noted that the building needed conservation as it was a point of attraction for those who visit Kandy. The building has been in existence since 1867 and the Postal Department has been using it since 1902. A Deputy Post Master General said conservation work should be carried out without disrupting the day-to-day work of the Post Office. He told the committee a new building could be constructed in the canteen area for the post office to operate there until conservation work was completed. Heritage Committee member Prof. A.S.M. Fausal said that regardless of objections, conservation project should be carried out and the building preserved for the posterity. Postal workers recently held a strike, protesting against moves by the Postal Ministry to hand over old post office buildings to private sector developers. - http://www.sundaytimes.lk/170716/news/world-bank-project-to-preserve-kandy-post-office-building-250556.html
