At the close of the seminar a questionnaire on abortion was distributed among the participants of the seminar in order to determine if the participants were in favor of changing the present abortion laws, and if so, in what way did they want the laws changed. Completed questionnaires were obtained from 71 respondents, including 37 doctors, 19 lawyers, 6 administrators,and 9 respondents representing diverse occupations. Most of the respondents were Sinhalese and 80% were Buddhists. Among the 59 doctors and lawyers, only 4 were satisfied with the present law. The majority were in favor of making abortion available to poor women and most viewed large families as a economic burden. 80% believed that abortion should be covered by a separate statute and that the statute should 1) specify qualification for abortion providers;2) require the registration of all abortion facilities;3) require women to obtain a certificate from a physician prior to abortion; and 4) allow unmarried women to have abortions. Although most of the respondents favored changing the laws, there was, in general, little consensus in regard to the specific manner in which the law should be changed. Given the lack of consensus, the Family Planning Association decided to undertake a study to determine the reasons why women seek abortion. Numerous attempts were made in the past to modify abortion laws, but as yet, no action has been taken. The recommendation was made that the members of the medical and legal professions seek to increase public awareness of the many issues involved in abortion.
