With relate to my last blog post about Mawbima Vs Divayina issue, I have some questions to be asked from "The Team behind Mawbima". I know they are not be reading my blog, but if I get a chance to ask them few questions from them (just like their questionnaire to Divayina Mudalali) I will ask below questions. You can think about the logical reasons why I ask these questions. There's an old saying "Don't throw stones at others, if you are living within glass walls". The same principle applies to people at Mawbima. 1) We know Nimal Welgama is behind Divayins, Thilanga Sumathipala is behind Lakbima, and Ranjith Wijewardena is behind Lankadeepa. Now who's behind Mawbima? 2) Who are the share holders of The Standard Newspapers Pvt. Ltd? 3) Who funded the multi million rupee launching campaign of Mawbima? (Some of the TV advertising spots cost Rs.100,000/- per 20 seconds. We know, Upali group, Sumathi Group, or Wijaya Papers can afford such a budget, because they are backed by well known businessmen of Sri Lanka. We know, "Lanka" or any other small newspaper cannot afford such a budget. How come Mawbima afford such a big advertising campaign, even before selling its first issue, if not supported by some sort of "Mudalali" ?)) You have 116 pages in you paper, sold at Rs.25/- per copy. We know most Sunday papers doesn't make profit on selling price of the paper. They just cover the cost by the selling price, and earn profit by advertising. 4) How can you cover the cost of 116 pages paper by selling it at Rs.25/- per copy? 5) On last Sunday's edition, you've allocated only 4 pages (in total) for advertisements (Only 3.4% of total content). Normally, 15% of a Sunday paper is dedicated for advertisements. How can you run a newspaper with such a limited amount of advertising earning? 6) You say you are only 2nd to Lankadeepa in sales. Prove it by figures! 7) You accuse "Divayina" is affected by Nimal Welgama's capital invenstment. How can you prove Mawbima is not affected by any one else's capital investment??? As I said in the earlier post, we can't judge the behavior of a Sunday paper by only reading one edition. But, until we get proper answers to above questions, we (Readers of newspapers) have enough doubt to think what Divayina says about Mawbima is true. Who funds Mawbima? What is their hidden agenda of pumping in millions of rupees to maintain and promote a national Sinhala language newspaper, at a loss????
