He attempted to sign he and his wife up for the program but she denies.  He does it alone or its mandatory for employees. The accident happens, killing him and the company  has lost out on his skills. His consciousness is place in this box which is also a simulated environment the company can monitor. A company employee is assigned to him as a handler and can call him just like his wife can. Every time he's side tracked she calls him to get him back on task. Which is why she's so annoyed when he wants to go to the bar. Its futile. At the end they know they are losing him so she calls and they simulate the helicopters to push/panic him just enough to finish his work before he expires. The company benefits from his skills anyway. Watch it again and see how she pushes him through out the movie.</p></blockquote><p></p>
