Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abewardhana says that the security forces sacrifice their lives in large numbers in their efforts to rescue the hostages without the support of heavy weapons and aerial attacks since they can cause harms to civilians.The Minister expressed these views addressing a special press briefing held in the Media Ministry yesterday morning (05).
Minister Abewardhana pointed out that the LTTE had used the opportunity of security forces suspending heavy weapons for the sake of the safety of civilians. LTTE fired heavy weapons against the Army killing them in large numbers, he said. The Minister saluted the security forces that sacrifice their lives for the motherland.
The United National Party (UNP) charges locally and internationally that the government is killing civilians in the no-fire zone while MP Palitha Range Bandara questions why the government is not using heavy weapons to attack the no-fire zone, said Minister Abewardhana adding that the UNP needed to reveal what its position regarding war.
He said that he was ashamed about MP Range Bandara’s statement. The MP has never gone beyond Vavuniya, he charges. Meanwhile, MP Jayalath Jayawardhana made a different statement to the Weerakesari Tamil newspaper. Minister Abewardhana asked the UNP to clarify its position without saying one to Divayina and a different view to Weerakesari.

Vithyadaran who was arrested by the Terrorist investigation Department. The Minister answered that democracy could not be safeguarded hundred percent in a country where terrorism exists. He pointed out that a person could be declared not connected to terrorism merely because he was released by the judiciary since there was no evidence.
