The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed a 42-year-old man from New South Wales has been missing since last week. It is believed the man is Premakumar Gunaratnam, a political activist involved with the People's Struggle Movement in Sri Lanka. The Australian High Commissioner in Colombo has spoken to senior Sri Lankan government officials to request their help finding him. Mr Gunaratnam's wife, Champa Somaratna, said in a statement his family knew secret police were responsible for abducting him. "My husband is an Australian citizen," she said. "We know the secret police have taken him. Without international intervention we know what they will do to him." Reports suggest Mr Gunaratnam has been abducted along with fellow activist Dimithu Attygalle. Both activists were reportedly preparing for the first convention of the Frontline Socialist Party, a party formed by dissidents from the opposition party. In a video appeal, his mother VR Gunaratnam asked for public help. "On the sixth [of April] my son Premakumar Gunaratnam was abducted by some unknown persons and we don't know where he is," she said. "I know his life is in danger. I have lost another son earlier Ranjitham Gunaratnam. He was also abducted in the same way and until his death I had never seen him. "I am scared that this fate will happen to my younger son, the only son I have. "So I ask the public to help, even if he has done illegal things, he can be punished. "I want to see him back and I ask the public to help, as a mother." http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/13373573/australian-man-feared-taken-by-secret-police/
