Whether its eco-friendly message and  Earth Day marketing helped sales or not is still unknown, but the  blu-ray edition smashed all previous first-day sales records, according to Reuters, despite this version of the film lacking a third  dimension.Early estimates of day one Avatar sales show that over 4  million copies of the movie were sold yesterday alone. Of those 4  million copies, about 1.5 million were blu-ray disks, which is well  above and beyond the figures for any other blu-ray sales on the first  day. The previous record holder was The Dark Knight. Avatar is being distributed by 20th Century Fox, and a  spokesperson for the company says that retailers sold about 50% of their  copies of Avatar on DVD and 60% for blu-ray on day one. A  second edition of the movie, which will have special features (but still  no 3D version) will hit stores in November. Fox estimates the release  of a 3D version of Avatar in early 2011, after more homes have  blu-ray players equipped to play this type of movie. Fox estimates that Avatar will outsell Twighlight: New  Moon, which is currently the best-selling movie of the year. New  Moon sold about 4 million copies over its first two days and has  sold about 6.5 million copies to date.</blockquote>
