Salesman Mervin's Corporative Manager now in the investigation committee to probe his acts (Lanka-e-News, Jan 04, 9.15 PM) The majority of the Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is worried over the decision taken on Minister Mervin Silva whose unruly behavior at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation was viewed by the entire nation. Several Central Committee members said to 'LeN' that the party decision was an insult to the pioneers of the party. Condemning Minister Mervin Silva' participation in the Central Committee meeting held to take action against him, they said that it was very unethical. They said that the SLFP Secretary Maithripala Sirisena yesterday contradicted what he stated on the incident earlier. The Secretary presenting the report said that it should be presented to the Disciplinary Committee. Party veteran Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda protested it and said that Minister Mervin's action was not violation of party discipline. He said that he could be warned instead of taking it to the Disciplinary Committee. This amazed the party senior members who were insisting disciplinary action against Minister Mervin Silva. They question if this happened to Dodangoda due to influence from higher echelons. Jayathissa Ranaweera, Jagath Pushpakumara and Vijithamuni Soyza took the path Minister Dodangoda opened and insisted that no disciplinary inquiry is needed. It was seemed that the President was also backing them and that made many who were to talk against Mervin Silva. One Minister who is a Central Committee member said, "You did not see what happened at the Rupavahini Corporation. Although I needed to talk but if I did so before the accised I would have to be attacked by the underworld goons." Minister Mervin Silva who was appointed to the Central Committee by Chandrika Kumarathunga participated in the Central Committee meeting wearing a blue cap. However, the SLFP Secretary Maithripala Sirisena's insistence pushed the Central Committee to appoint a disciplinary committee to probe the Rupavahini Corporation incident. Instead of the party disciplinary committee a special committee comprised of Ministers John Senevirathna, Nimal Siripla de Silva and Alevi Mawlana was appointed to probe the incident. A Central Committee member said to 'LeN' that a party disciplinary committee decision to remove Western Provincial Council Minister Hector Bethmage from the portfolio due to assisting a murder suspect to leave the country is also defunct up to date. He said that John Senevirathna was the Chairman of that disciplinary committee as well. He laughingly said that 'the manager of the corporative store where Mervin was a salesman is also in the disciplinary committee'. On the Wednesday cabinet meeting, when John Senevirathna said that Mervin Silva's action put them also in trouble, the President silenced him saying that such things could be discussed the following day at the Central Committee. The President also heard uttering that 'T.M.G. should be beaten not there'.
