The title is a way of telling the public as much. It also distances the film from kiddie comic books, Saturday morning cartoons, the campy 1960s TV series and the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher movies of the late 80s and 90s. In fact, this will be the first Batman movie not to have "Batman" in the title.Are Christopher Nolan's films connected to the previous Batman series ? :No. Christopher Nolan has reinvented Batman and distanced themselves as much as possible from the previous series.Then why bring back the Joker ? :You can't have Batman without the Joker. In the public imagination, he's more important to Batman than Robin (who has yet to appear in Nolan's series). Besides, the Joker is a nasty figure who is very much in keeping with the grim tone of the new series.Why isn't Katie Holmes returning as Rachel Dawes ? :Katie Holmes's publicists said she had scheduling conflicts because of her new movie, Mad Money.
