Four teams, namely Pakistan, Chinese Taipei, Brunei and the host Sri Lanka will fight their way to qualify for the next stage. Sri Lanka will take on Brunei marking the opening of the tournament at 4.00p.m. The match will be followed by the Pakistan vs Chinese Taipei encounter which will be played under floodlights. Sri Lanka is ranked as the best among the four teams which will play off at the Sugathadasa Stadium in the next few days, according to the past records and tough resistance is expected from other three countries. Sri Lankan skipper Chathura Maduranga Weerasinghe is very confident that his boys are in the best frame of mind and the team is in good form at the moment. Meanwhile Sri Lankan coach Sampath Perera is looking forward to a victorious start and is hoping to see the Lankans in the next round. Sri Lanka faces this AFC challenge with mixed results they obtained over the past years. Their highest achievement at the AFC Challenge cup came in 2006 when they emerged runner up after losing to Kyrghistan in the final. in 2008 they qualified for the second round and beat Pakistan (7-1), Guam (4-1) while drawing with Chinese Taipei (2-2). Pakistan who are ranked 166 in the FIFA ratings, will come out as the best among the rest. Chinese Taipei are in the 167th position while Brunei is placed 183rd. In the final round, Sri Lanka lost to DPR Korea (0-3), Myanmar (0-3) and Nepal (0-3) But they drew with Male in a one all show down at the Sugathadasa Stadium at the end of March, their most recent international encounter played on their home soil. After their recent tour to Nepal where they were the runners up, lost in a penalty shootout in the final, the boys have been working hard, practising and undergoing special training sessions prior to this particular tournament.
