This motivation evaporated after the discovery by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Hubble" target="_blank">Edwin Hubble</a> that the universe is not static, but expanding; in particular, Hubble discovered a relationship between <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble%27s_Law" target="_blank">redshift and distance</a>, which forms the basis for the modern <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_expansion_of_space" target="_blank">expansion paradigm</a>.
