Here`s what I remember based on an explanation of Agganna suthra by waharaka hamuduruwo. I haven’t read Agganna suthra, just listen to the explanation. Kalpa 80 > maha kalpa 1 The world (say Earth) completes a full cycle within the Maha Kalpa. • First 20 Kalpa – lookaya athi wemin pawathi • Second 20 Kalpa – lookaya athi wela pawathi (we are in this stage now) • Third 20 kalpa – lookaya nathi wemin pawathi • Fourth 20 kalpa – lookaya nathi wela pawathi So the cycle continues every Maha Kalpa (I am NOT sure whether the exact duration of a Maha Kalpa is the same each cycle) Here`s my take on the initial question: • “Bhadra Kalpa” is the current set of kalpa`s (third set of 20, where the world is in a liveable state) • This “Bhadra Kalpa”, budhu waru 4k pahala wela iwarai, thawa 1 namak pahala weemata niyamithai • Yes, the world is about 4.5 billion years old, based on current scientific evidence • But I believe the “composition/environment” of this world (i.e. Earth) has changed 4 times within this “Bhadra Kalpa”. This explains why life expectancy, body size etc.. would change during the times of the last 4 budhu waru. All 4 cycles may or may not have happened during the 4.5 billion years. Perhaps only the current cycle is 4.5 billion years old, the previous 3 may have happened before. But all 4 happened within the “Bhadra Kalpa”, where the world did not get completely destroyed. • So homo-sapiens (us humans) live within the current composition/environment, the current human species will get destroyed/evolved and start to develop as a somewhat different species (still human qualities, but different body size etc..) by the time Maithree bhudu lives in this world • After the 5th “composition/environment” change of this world, the whole world as we know it will get destroyed, up to ‘Aabhassara brahma looka’. Out of the 31 plains, every plain below ‘Aabhassara brahma looka’ will get destroyed. As i said, this is purely based on an explanation of "Agganna suthra". BUT the “composition/environment” change of the world is my take since this is not clearly explained in the suttra
