They fail when you have no space to move. The Sinhalese sword (long scimitar) was good because when you swing it, it's hard to tell where it's gonna hit you, although the damage is less and armour puncturing is zero. After 1400's Sinhalese started using the sabre with guard (specially the high class people). </blockquote>
