It ranks countries and territories on a scale of 0 - 100 based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A 0 means that a country is perceived as highly corrupt and 100 means it is perceived as very clean.According to the Berlin-based corruption watchdog, since Sri Lanka has scored below 50, the country has not still minimized the level of corruption in the public sector and there is a great need to strengthen the anti - corruption mechanisms in the island.Countries' scores can be helped by strong access to information systems and rules governing the behavior of those in public positions, while a lack of accountability across the public sector coupled with ineffective public institutions hurt these perceptions, the organization said.In this year's index Denmark and New Zealand tie for first place with scores of 91 while Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are the worst performers, scoring just 8 points each.Among Sri Lanka's neighbors in the South Asian region India ranked at 94th, Pakistan at 127th, Nepal at 116th, and Bangladesh placed at 136th of the Corruption index.
