Environment Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the police will  impose a fin of not less than Rs. 3000 and not more than Rs. 5000 on  vehicles which violate the sound limits. He also said that equipment, including sound amplification systems  will be impounded if they violate the sound regulations on vehicles. The police will use sophisticated equipment to measure the sound  coming from a vehicle during the crackdown which will begin in the city  limits. Premajayantha said that there is a stipulated distance and decibel at  which a sound can be heard from a vehicle, even from vehicle horns. He said that any vehicle found to be sending out a sound which goes  beyond two and seven meters and above 105 decibels will be dealt with. The Minister said that there have been complaints from the public on noise pollution from vehicles on the street.
