Dihydrotestosterone production in excess is supposed to be the main cause of the Alopecia in men. Male pattern baldness is scientifically termed as Alopecia. More than 90% cases of the alopecia are found to have the DHT production in excess. DHT is produced in vivo in men and is responsible for the formation of male sex specific characteristics. DHT belongs to the group of compounds known as androgens. It performs the function of growth and maintenance of the masculine characteristics. DHT is three times more potent than the testosterone. These are all the good effects of DHT, but when it is produced in excess it leads to the male pattern baldness (alopecia) or prostate problems in the men. Testosterone is the main hormone responsible for the proper hair growth. When the testosterone amount in the body are lowered men face the problem of baldness. This happens due to the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that converts the testosterone to the dihydrotestosterone. The enzyme 5-alpha reductase when produced in excess converts all the stored testosterone in the body into dihydrotestosterone, thus the levels of the testosterone in the body are lowered. As the amount of the dihydrotestosterone in the body is increased it binds to the hair follicles and disturbs the blood supply to the hairs. As a result the growth of the hairs is completely retarded. The hairs start thinning and eventually the fall down. The higher the concentration of DHT, hair follicles get shrink more, and hair loss is promoted.
