Ranil damns dissolution as distraction By Kelum Bandara Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe charged yesterday the Government had dissolved two provincial councils only to distract the public from the pressing problems they were facing. Mr. Wickremesinghe told journalists that the dissolution of the councils or holding elections is no solution to the crisis gripping the nation today and promised the UNP would go all out to save the suffering masses. He said the rate of inflation has gone up to 30 percent in Sri Lanka today, but it is only eight percent in India even after fuel price hikes. Ranil “Today, people have been thrown from the frying pan into the fire. The Government has to resolve the Grade 1 admission crisis. Similarly, the teachers’ salary problem has to be resolved. The Government has now taken the easy way out by closing the schools,” he said. “There is a crisis in the health service as well, and people do not receive proper treatment in state hospitals .Hospitals have no drugs to treat a cold or chikengunya,” he said. “Today, there is no party called the SLFP. Family politics has replaced party politics in the country,” he said. The UNP leader also charged that the Government is also trying to make Parliament ‘impotent’ by not following the proper procedure to appoint the Secretary General. He said that the independent commissions set up under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution are not functioning today “The UNP would fight tooth and nail to win the democratic rights of people,” he said. “We will take to the streets and fight until we see an end to these problems. There will be obstacles in our way but we will overcome them. Today, two kinds of bombs are striking fear into people - the cost of living bomb planted by the Government and the other kind planted by the LTTE,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.
