Message: <blockquote data-quote="lkdood" data-source="post: 11166742" data-attributes="member: 92282">Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawaka warned in Parliament  today that it would be difficult to operate the Ceylon Electricity Board  (CEB) if the prevailing drought conditions continued and the heavy dependency on thermal power continues.The Minister said that the dependency on thermal power  has reached  alarming proportions since August due to the drought that has affected  many areas in the country.He also revealed that the daily losses suffered by the CEB is around  Rs. 167 million since August. “If the bad weather continues, we will have to take action for the  smooth operation of the CEB without leaving any room for its breakdown,”  the Minister said in response to a query raised by UNP MP Ravi  Karunanayaka.The Minister said electricity prices are determined by the Public Utilities Commission. The CEB generates 48 percent of electricity from thermal power and  47  percent from hydro power and the rest from wind and other energy sources  but the recent drought has led to heavy dependency on thermal power.ST</blockquote>
