<blockquote data-quote="lkdood" data-source="post: 6306885" data-attributes="member: 92282"><p><strong>Elections Commissioner has instructed the Rupavahini Corporation to ban the telecast of five TV programmes namely Yakshawesaya, Edagena Nema, Kimbul Kandulu, Pravurthi Pasubima and Vinivida with immediate effect.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>The Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has toughened his stand on the state media by directing the Chairman of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) to ban the five programmes.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>The representatives of the political parties, who met Mr. Dissanayake recently, had raised concerns about the telecast of these programmes violating all forms of journalistic ethics. They had complained out that there is injustice caused to the opposition through these programmes.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>Accordingly, the Elections Commissioner has written to SLRC Chairman Ariyaratne Athugala saying that these programmes are in contravention of Article 104(5) (A) of the Constitution. </strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>This Article determines the power and functions of the Elections Commissioner. It has given powers for the Commissioner to issue guidelines for the broadcasting and telecasting operators and newspaper publishers if the situation demands in the run up to an election. </strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>The Chairmen of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the SLRC are required to comply with such guidelines issued by the Elections Commissioner. Otherwise, the Commissioner has the power to appoint a Competent Authority to oversee their operations during the election period. </strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Meanwhile, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference yesterday that the Commissioner appears to be making every possible effort to ensure a free and fair election.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>“The Commissioner seems to be doing his maximum in this case,” he said.</strong></p><p><strong>Mr. Silva also charged that senior police officers are now canvassing for the President, and it is totally illegal.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>Earlier, Mr. Dissanayake also cancelled the transfer of SP Ampara Jayantha Rohana Jayawardane. IGP Mahinda Balasuriya has acted to transfer Mr. Jayawardane to Kilinochchi as removed the unlawful cut-outs of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Ampara.</strong></p><p></p><p><strong>Now, the Elections Commissioner has directed the police to remove all the cut-outs within today. He has warned of action against police officers failing to do so. </strong></p><p></p><p><strong>The Commissioner also appointed former Civil Servant Jayampathi Hettiarachchi as the Competent Authority to monitor the functions of the state electronic media.
