[QUOTE="saraprobe, post: 888578, member: 13914"] Electronic ticketing machine to be made compulsory NTC has found 40% of the income of private buses and 20% income of SLTB buses are siphoned off By Sandun A Jayasekera The use of a new electronic ticketing machine is to be made compulsory for SLTB buses and long distance private buses from January 1, 2008, Transport Minister Dulles Alahapperuma said yesterday. The new electronic ticket machine is considered foolproof and has been so devised to issue tickets featuring all essential details. Addressing a press briefing at the National Savings Bank yesterday Minister Alahapperuma said that issuing tickets is in the interest of the Commuter as well as the Bus owner. “The National Transport Commission has found that 40% of the income of private buses and 20% income of the SLTB buses are siphoned off. If the both sectors are to be developed, this disturbing trend has to be stopped,” Mr. Alahapperuma said. The ministry intends to make ticket machines compulsory for three wheelers and all private buses before the end of 2008. The introduction of ticket machines to the entire fleet of private buses numbering 19.000 and Three Wheelers will be carried out through Provincial Councils and other local government bodies, he said. After the issuance of tickets to the commuters being made compulsory route permits will not be issued to buses that do not use ticket machines. Bus drivers will also be issued with a new license to make road transport safe for not only for passengers but other road users too, Minister Alahapperuma said.
