These traditions mast be maintained and continued by the younger generation who will take over from the present generation” said Sri Lanka’s national cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara.He made these observations at a felicitation ceremony on his appointment as captain of the Sri Lanka cricket team held at the Asgiriya Cricket Stadium in Kandy yesterday.Kumar Sangakkara said that you may earn money and fame through your own efforts in your chosen field but nothing  is greater than being invited to your old school and being honoured among the younger and older generation. It is a wonderful moment nostalgic of the past bringing back sweet memories of a by gone era.Sangakkara said that being back in school and felicitated is a wonderful occasion. You start your life at Trinity as a young one and the school enhances what your parents had inculcated in you. At school you go through the mill and study many things which makes you a man in later life and above all makes you a responsible citizen of the society which is so important.At Trinity we were taught many things - to respect and love others. Politics had no place at Trinity neither was race, caste or religion. We lived and were brought up as members of one family. That is Trinity and its spirit.Speaking with emotion Kumar said that he was at Trinity College for 14 years starting from the lowest form and the experience has been wonderful. The teachers were wonderful and they taught the correct  things and most of the teachers stayed on long periods and even the minor or kitchen staff put on over 30 years of service.  This is something unique and we get to known each other well and understand each other. Whatever he does it stems from the experience he received at Trinity. It is simply a wonderful school and the Best School of all.We must not live on our past glory. We must give to the country and the world what we have achieved. We have a role to play as responsible. citizens and play that role well.The Acting Principal of Trinity College Brigadier Udaya Aryaratne said that Kumar Sangakkara was one of the finest products to come out of the portals of Trinity College. He was outstanding not only in sports but also in studies as he secured three A’s at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination thereby becoming eligible to enter the University. He was the Senior Prefect of the school end also won the Ryde Gold medal awarded to the best all round student.He said Sangakkara who was born in Matale had his entire education at Trinity College. He was the junior national champion at badminton and tennis but he faded out of both sports to concentrate on cricket as he believed that his goal lay there.  He cut his teeth when he was selected as the as the reserve wicket keeper for the under 13 ‘B’ team against the College under 13 ‘A’ team However the wicket keeper could not turn up  due to illness and Kumar Sangakkara got his break. He batted as the last man and scored an unbeaten 85 helping his side to beat the stronger ‘A’ team. A      star was born and there was no looking back.   President of the Trinity College Old Boys’ Association Brigadier Jupana Jayawardena delivered the vote of thanks.Earlier Kumar Sangakkara was received by the Old boys and staff of Trinity College near the old Trinitians’ Sports Club and was escorted in a procession to the accompaniment of the Kandyan dancing to the Asgiriya Stadium.  Kumar had a field day signing hundreds of autographs handed by the young Trinitians. At one stage he was mobbed and the hoardings at the Asgiriya Stadium came down.</blockquote>
