    Lugano

    Name: Diego Alfredo Lugano Moreno
    Team: Uruguay
Date of birth: 2 November 1980
    Place of birth: Canelones
    Club: Fenerbahce
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

Uruguay were the very last team to qualify for South Africa, and their victory over Costa Rica in their play-off owed much to their captain, Diego Lugano. A strong and vocal character and every inch the leader of this team, Lugano scored what turned out to be the crucial only goal in the first leg of the tie and Uruguay went through after a 1-1 draw in the second. It was the third time in succession Uruguay had to qualify for the Fifa World Cup through a play-off. "I am happy to qualify, but not for the way we've clinched it," Lugano said after the match. "It is unbelievable that we have to suffer this way." Hard man Lugano (he has been known to pick up the odd rash red), made his name with the great Brazilian side Sao Paulo, where a huge trophy haul included a World Club Championship title in 2005. He now plays for Turkish giants Fenerbahce, where his bravery and commitment has won him a permanent spot in the heart of the fans. Uruguay, whose supporters will be pleased with a strong performance in the group phase, will need all his leadership skills and tough tackling tactics if they are to make it through the group stages of this summer's competition.

    Bougherra

    Name: Madjid Bougherra
    Team: Algeria
Date of birth: 7 October 1982
    Place of birth: Longvic
    Club: Rangers
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

Hard in the challenge and always willing to bring the ball out himself, Madjid Bougherra's uncompromising but cultured style has made him a hit for both club and country, and earned him the nickname 'Magic'. He forged his reputation with spells at FC Gueugnon, Crewe Alexandra and Sheffield Wednesday, before he was snapped up by Rangers in 2008. In a wonderful first season at Ibrox, a series of superb displays saw Bougherra earn himself the supporters' Player of the Year award, along with the Scottish Premier League and Cup Winner's medals. He plumped to play for Algeria rather than France, making his debut for his country in 2004. Since then he has become a key part of a defence that shipped only three goals in seven World Cup qualifying games. He'll be hoping to replicate his fantastic club form for his country this summer.

    Da Silva

Name: Paulo Cesar da Silva Barrios
    Team: Paraguay
Date of birth: 1 February 1980
    Place of birth: Asuncion
    Club: Sunderland
    World Cups: 1
    Appearances: 1
    Goals: 0

Da Silva first made his name as a top class defender when he starred for Paraguay as a teenager at the Fifa World Youth Championship in 1997 and 1999. He went on to add to his growing reputation as a top-class defender in Italy with Perugia and Venezia, before returning to his home country, where in 2002 he won a Paraguayan Championship winner's medal with Libertad. Da Silva then impressed in the tough world of Mexican football with Toluca, where he won two national titles and the Mexican Cup. The much-travelled Da Silva is now a favourite on Wearside with Sunderland. Brought in by manager Steve Bruce to shore up the team's leaky defence, Da Silva's whole-hearted and fearless style has made him a favourite at the Stadium Of Light. He has developed into a key figure for the Paraguayan national side's rearguard. He was in his country's squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and in 2007 was named in the South American Select All-Star team of the Year. Capped more than 50 times for his country, he is Paraguay's inspirational leader and was a key part of their campaign to make it to the World Cup Finals.

    Durica

    Name: Jan Durica
    Team: Slovakia
Date of birth: 10 November, 1981
    Place of birth: Dunajska Streda
    Club: Lokomotiv Moscow
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

Wearing the No 4 shirt for his club, Hannover 96, Durica is a strong defender, comfortable playing at left-back or centre half. An attacking player, he is just as good going forward as he is staying back in defence, and shows good passing skills when on the ball - and he's not shy of advancing to midfield if his team needed him to. While he has a modest goal tally of one in 35 appearances, he cancelled his sole strike out with two own goals at Euro 2008. The 28-year-old first showed up on the European radar back in 2005, after enjoying a successful Champions League stint with Artmedia Bratislava, including being part of the side that thrashed Gordon Strachan's Celtic 5-0. Despite Celtic's attempts to sign the defender, in 2009 he moved to Lokomotiv Moscow for 3.5 million euros. With 35 caps at international level, he has been tagged as being "better than Skrtel" by some in the business, and has also been linked with a move to Fulham in recent months. An experienced defender, he'll have to be at his tough-tackling best in South Africa.

    Agger

    Name: Daniel Agger
    Team: Denmark
Date of birth: 12 December 1984
    Place of birth: Hvidovre
    Club: Liverpool
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

One of the most promising ballplaying central defenders anywhere, Daniel Agger is hot property. His fierce left-foot shots have resulted in spectacular goals for both club and country, and though his Liverpool career has been dogged by injury, this still young, very committed and very tattooed player has an exciting career ahead of him. He kicked off his career at Brondby, who he helped to the Danish league title in his first full season, earning himself Denmark's Player's Player of the Year award in the process. His first full international cap in 2005 was swiftly followed by a 5.8 million pound transfer to Liverpool in January 2006, making him Denmark's most expensive footballing export. Despite immediately looking the part with his Hansonesque moves forward, injuries mean that Agger has had to endure a stopstart career with the Reds. Shrugging off a back injury that almost ended his career, he has fought back to fitness to take his place in Denmark's already miserly backline, helping them qualify top of their group and consigning Portugal to a play-off. Agger has the ability to hit a ball sweetly from long distance, so don't be surprised if he pops up on the score sheet.

    Bocanegra

    Name: Carlos Manuel Bocanegra
    Team: United States
Date of birth: 25 May 1979
    Place of birth: Upland, California
    Club: Rennes
    World Cups: 1
    Appearances: 2
    Goals: 0

Comfortable playing at centre, left-back and left wing-back, versatile US captain Carlos Bocanegra is not blessed with great pace, but he does possess organisational skills in abundance. A great captain, Bocanegra leads by example and marshals his defenders, and the rest of the team, from the first whistle to the last. Very strong in the air, hopeful crosses are meat and drink to him. Precise in the tackle, he also breaks up passing movements really effectively. Bocanegra is no stranger when it comes to finding the back of the net either, and is always dangerous during set pieces. Bocanegra appeared in all 38 league matches for French team Rennes last season, but has struggled to hold down a regular first team place in 2009. However, Bocanegra's lack of first team action at club level will not effect his World Cup chances, as the new USA manager Bob Bradley sees him as a key part of a settled defence, thanks to his leadership skills and bags of experience.

    Alves

    Name: Eduardo Regufe Bruno Alves
    Team: Portugal
Date of birth: 27 November 1981
Place of birth: Povoa de Varzim
    Club: Porto
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

Dominant in the air and aggressive in his play, the Portuguese defender has been the rock in Porto's defence this season, and has established himself as the cornerstone of his national side's defence. Appearing 27 times for Portugal and scoring four goals, Alves has been in outstanding form both domestically and for his country, and has flourished since Jesualdo Ferreira took over as Porto coach, two seasons ago. Recently Alves has been linked with a number of Premiership clubs looking to shore up their defence, and it seems unlikely that he will be lining up for Porto at the start of next season. Tough and uncompromising, he is a talented defender who has a strong, physical presence. He's also a threat going forward and knows how to find the back of the net from open play and dead ball situations. Alves has the mentality and ability to help his team achieve great things in South Africa.

    Bamba

    Name: Souleymane Bamba
    Team: Ivory Coast
Date of birth: 13 January 1985
    Place of birth: Ivry-sur-Seine
    Club: Hibernian
    World Cups: 0
    Appearances: 0
    Goals: 0

He may be nowhere near as famous as Chelsea star and Ivorian teammate Didier Drogba, but hardman Hibs defender Souleymane Bamba - nicknamed Sol - will be a key player for Ivory Coast at the World Cup this summer. Tough and uncompromising, Bamba stands at a towering 6' 3", and is a formidable obstacle to come up against. His nononsense tackling has won him plenty of fans and admiration wherever he has played. Bamba began his career with Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 14. In 2006, he moved to Dunfermline, where his big challenges made him an instant idol. During his time there, Bamba became a much-improved player, and as a result in 2008 he moved to Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, where he showed his versatility by playing in a defensive midfield role before ably filling the void left by former club captain Rob Jones at centre-half. Sol was ever present for Ivory Coast's 2010 African Cup of Nations campaign.
