Zidane 'hopeful' Ronaldo & Benzema will be fit for second leg Real Madrid are hopeful that both Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema will be fully fit for the Champions League semi-final second leg after the Portuguese sat out Tuesday’s match against Manchester City. Manager Zinedine Zidane – who had said both players were “100 per cent” fit previously – confirmed that the 31-year-old felt a twinge in the final training session before the game, aggravating the thigh strain he picked up against Villarreal, while Benzema had to be withdrawn at half-time. But the French boss is planning to be able to call upon the duo at the Santiago Bernabeu and was reluctant to risk Ronaldo in Manchester, with a 0-0 draw giving his side a solid foundation ahead of the return leg. “I said 100% but I did say there was still the training session to go,” Zidane said after watching his side’s goalless stalemate at the Etihad Stadium. “Cristiano felt something after that. That is all there is to it. We didn’t want to make things worse. Karim it was a little bit different but little by little he felt a bit worse in himself. We didn’t want to gamble on his fitness. “We know how important both players are for us. We hope they can both be in the second leg but we have to take it day by day.” Asked if they would make the second leg, he continued: “We are going to try and get them fit. That is our plan. I can’t assure you of anything. I can’t tell you right now if they will be fit. We have to look at it day by day.”
