'It's over' – has Van Gaal signalled the end of his Man Utd career? Louis van Gaal's future as Manchester United manager has reached a new level of uncertainty as the Dutch boss was quoted as saying “it's over” as he left the club's hotel on Sunday. Rumours had been circulating that Van Gaal was set to meet with members of the United board on Sunday to learn his fate, while the club's players are still very much in the dark. Whether the 64-year-old has indeed met with club officials to discuss the next step is unclear, but when asked if he had anything to say to reporters upon exiting his team's central London hotel he told Sky Sports “No. No. It's over”. The Dutchman led United to their first FA Cup triumph in 12 years on Saturday as Jesse Lingard's extra-time winner capped a 2-1 comeback victory over Crystal Palace despite the sending-off of Chris Smalling. However, Van Gaal was later plagued by a slew of questions regarding the latest reports coming out of Spain that Jose Mourinho is set to be appointed as United's new manager in the coming days, bringing the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss' reign to an end 12 months short of his planned 2017 retirement date. Mourinho has been regularly linked with the Old Trafford role since his dismissal by Chelsea in December following a disastrous start to the defending champions' Premier League campaign, but United have refused to speak on the issue at any point over the ensuing five months. Former United assistant boss Rene Meulensteen said in the past week that the club should have done more to protect the manager and had failed to bring clarity to the situation.“It’s not very good for the club, the players and Louis van Gaal that there have been so many rumours,” he said. “Louis has been very clear in saying he will be there next season. That’s fine, but the club should back that up. There has been a lack of clarity and they’ve allowed the situation to be drawn out over the last six months.” But United's fifth-place Premier League finish, which confirms a second season in three years without Champions League football in 2016-17, may well see the club finally make a decision on Van Gaal's two-year tenure.
