The 76-year-old's son Darren - who is Doncaster Rovers manager - missed his team's game with Wigan Athletic on Saturday due to a "severe family issue". As statement on Doncaster's website read: “Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week."United have confirmed that Ferguson, their manager for 27 years until his retirement in 2013, is receiving treatment in hospital.A United statement read: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.  "The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."Everyone at Manchester United sends our very best wishes."Ferguson was seen just last weekend at Old Trafford, as he presented departing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a gift to commemorate his time in north London.  Ferguson went down in history at United after breaking a 25-year title drought with the inaugural Premier League trophy in 1992-93.That win sparked an unprecedented spell of domination for the Red Devils, who under the Scot lifted a further 12 top-flight titles.  Fergie also led United to two Champions League crowns in 1998-99 and 2007-08, and was at the club for a total of 27 years before finally stepping down at the end of the 2012-13 campaign after celebrating his 13th Premier League triumph. As well as with the Manchester giants, Ferguson also enjoyed success in the 1980s at the helm of Aberdeen, where he won three Scottish Premier League titles. During a playing career that took place between 1957 and 1974, Ferguson was known as a combative centre-forward and starred for the likes of Rangers and St. Johnstone in his native Scotland.Considered one of the greatest managers ever, Ferguson was knighted in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to the game. Manchester United honoured their manager even further in 2011, when Old Trafford's North Stand was renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand on the 25th anniversary of his appointment.</blockquote>
